Dear Clients, Colleagues, Partners and Visitors:
We have all watched in grief and anger at the murder of George Floyd months ago . . . and before that, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery . . . and before that Philando Castile, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin . . . and before that countless others for generations and centuries into our country's past.
On behalf of Nedra Cannon and Associates, I want to say that we stand with the peaceful protesters who are insisting with their voices and their bodies that this racist terror has to stop. We stand with those who insist Black Lives Matter. And we stand against those who would prevent these peaceful protest voices from being heard.
As a practice dedicated to mental health, I believe the most important action we can take together is to continue to meet the mental health needs of the people we serve. So we will do that.
We all have a lot of work to do. But for all of us, it is a time to declare where we stand. So I am telling you where Nedra Cannon and Associates stands.
Nedra Cannon and Associates was founded by Nedra Cannon, LMSW. NCA specializes in working with complex trauma, problems related to racial trauma, sex therapy, imposter syndrome and navigating phase of life concerns. NCA is dedicated to providing those impacted by racial trauma, generational trauma , and survivors of sexual trauma the highest level of care.
Nedra founded NCA for three distinct purposes:
The first reason was to provide high quality mental health care to people, especially people of color , who have experienced chronic complex trauma including sexual abuse and assault. She is dedicated to working with therapists who want to provide high level care to women and families who are struggling with the generational passage of trauma. By developing NCA, Nedra is working towards high competency mental health services and integration of medication management aimed to eventually decrease health disparities on a population level. By providing education, resources, and high quality mental health to treat the systemic family problems that lead to higher instances of trauma - the hope is that enough change can be created to reduce the overall instances of mental health stigma, and increase overall whole health.
The second reason that NCA was created was to provide a unit that values the dignity of each individual therapist. It is rooted in Nedra's spiritual foundations, and the belief that each person has innate value in the world, and unique talents and gifts. Nedra's mission is to provide an extension of family that honors her contractors, interns and volunteers. NCA promotes a culture that promotes family life, stability, living your purpose , boundary formation, in addition to mental and physical health. The third reason is to establish a wellness center that is a safe place for marginalized communities to come for counseling, medication management, and meditation. Furthermore, by creating the wellness center, NCA will be leading the way in Michigan to offer workshops and trainings related to working specifically with people of color, diversity, equity and inclusion, with a social and racial justice lens.
